Greenback Tailor & Longtail Tuna, Maroochydore

“Deano and I just finished up some future event planning for the day and were deciding what we wanted to do over the weekend.. We finally came to an agrrement to hook up the boat and head south to fish off Maroochydore for the arvo. After a quick stop at the servo and uncle Dan’s we were on the water. With the bay full of longies we decided to join and band wagon and chased them around for a while, Deano got one on his go to Jackfin 90mm stickbait. With one in the boat, it was time to chase some snapper on the light stuff, about 5 mins into fishing our first spot I hooked what we thought was along tail tuna, it towed us around for 15 minutes or so until the hooks pulled right at the boat and we got a glance at what looked like a big grey/shark mackerel. The sun was set by now so we decided to have a quick drop where the mackie towed us to and what do you know… Big reef flatty baby! They don’t call me the lizard wizard for nothing! We got a quick pic, chucked a tag in her and then safely released her.”

“We were back out there at first light the next morning, ready for some more action, however we were back in the river by about 8 after being joined by what seemed like every bloke in SEQ. We were heading up the river to grab a feed/coffee when we spotted some bait spraying on the surface. I’m sure glad we stopped because what was about to happen was the most hectic thing either of us have ever seen in our river systems. We had two casts into the bait which resulted in two rather quick bust offs, whatever was harassing this bait was big and angry! We were yet to get a glimpse of what these fish were, that was until about thirty of these things started launching themselves out of the water chasing this bait. To say we were excited would be an understatement, our minds raced rattling off what we thought they were, until we finally got a look at one. Deano hooked this thing and no joke it was an 80-90cm fish. Unfortunately we lost the big one, but we got into a heap of smaller models and like always got a few quick pics, chucked a tag in them and safely released them to live another day. We had this to ourselves for a good hour until a few local grommies rocked up for a share of the action. We’d had our fun so we left them to experience what we had!!” - Heath ‘Grub’ Robinson
